General comments
De belangrijkste verwekker is S. aureus. Er bestaat een aanzienlijke kans op diepere infectie (pees, vingerkootje of vingergewricht), het is daarom van belang om osteomyelitis uit te sluiten.
Een herpetische infectie (Whitlow vinger) kan klinisch sterke gelijkenis vertonen met een bacterieel infect. Diagnostiek wordt verricht middels PCR op Herpes simplex. Antibiotica zijn in dit geval niet werkzaam.
