General comments
Oorzaak is meestal viraal. Indien er een secundaire bacteriële infectie optreedt betreft dit meestal tracheïtis en tracheobronchitis.
De belangrijkste verwekkers zijn dan H. influenzae, S. pneumoniae en M. catarrhalis.
