General comments
Geen behandeling, tenzij ernstige infectie.
Shigatoxineproducerende Escherichia coli/enterohemorragische Escherichia coli-infectie is een meldingsplichtige ziekte groep B2.
Geeft diarree met bloed en slijm bijmenging.
Besmetting treedt op door het eten van onvoldoende verhit vlees (hamburgerziekte). De klachten worden veroorzaakt door toxines uitgescheiden door de bacterie. Als complicatie kan het haemolytisch uremisch syndroom voorkomen.
Shigatoxine producerende Escherichia coli (STEC) kan worden aangetoond middels een PCR op feces.
